ADHD Therapy

Are You Struggling To Navigate Life With An ADHD Diagnosis?

Do you feel like ADHD is straining your relationships, hurting your career, or generally making it difficult to function and be at your best?

Are you struggling to come to terms with an ADHD diagnosis as a young adult and looking for support managing emotions, becoming more organized, or just finding direction in your life?

Perhaps you’re the parent of a child who experiences frustrating issues with impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention, or forgetfulness.

Or maybe you’re curious about ADHD therapy because you have an adolescent with similar issues, and those challenges are beginning to affect the whole family.

ADHD Is A Dynamic Condition That Can Look Different For Everyone

For young children, ADHD often manifests as symptoms that are misunderstood as laziness, restlessness, carelessness, and defiance. Adolescents and teens regularly struggle with low self-esteem issues, emotional overwhelm, and social and academic challenges. Parents and families may feel at a loss for how to help their kids.

For young adults, ADHD may look like difficulty managing time and staying on task in school or at work. And adults with ADHD can have trouble finding validation for their symptoms in a world that demands we all function and learn the same way.

Whether you’re reading this as a parent, a young adult, or an adult who has dealt with ADHD for a while now, Key Counseling Group understands, and we want to help. Working with one of our skilled therapists can help you gain valuable insight into ADHD, build new skills for coping with symptoms, and remove the roadblocks that often hold people back.

ADHD Adds Another Layer Of Stress To Life For Many People

Our culture is hyper-focused on high performance, achievement, and perfection. We expect each person to work at the same pace, learn the same way, and continuously excel. However, this way of existing can be incredibly overwhelming and burdensome, especially when you’re living with ADHD.

Despite your best efforts, it can feel like you're constantly not hitting the mark or able to stay on pace with the rest of society. You may get accused of being lazy or difficult because you can’t conform to the rigid boundaries of what is considered typical and acceptable.

And although people are becoming increasingly informed, some individuals may dismiss your ADHD as something “everyone has” or label it as an excuse, rather than taking the time to understand the ways it affects you.

This false notion can be painful and damaging, particularly in younger populations.

ADHD Is Really Difficult To Tackle Alone

This disorder impacts your executive functioning skills—your ability to organize, plan, and control impulses—which makes it hard to self-implement strategies for finding relief. ADHD can also impact your self-perception and ability to self-regulate, making it difficult to understand and manage symptoms.

Because Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is so multifaceted, it can be overwhelming to tackle without the help of therapy. However, our therapists at Key Counseling Group are here to help you better understand the challenges of ADHD while offering you long-term strategies for managing everyday life.

Therapy Can Help You Finally Make Sense Of ADHD

Living with ADHD can be a confusing and daunting experience. That’s why our therapists at Key Counseling Group want to offer you a chance to really understand how Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder works and what you can do (for yourself or as a parent) to make life a little easier.

People with ADHD are often resilient and can use their strengths, such as compassion, empathy, and loyalty, to overcome challenges, manage symptoms, and better navigate their life. Our job is to show you how to harness the power of your uniqueness so that ADHD begins working for you instead of against you.

What Are Our ADHD Therapy Sessions Like?

First, we’re going to look at how ADHD is affecting your (or your child’s) social development, relationships, academics, family life, and mental health. We’ll also identify some of the goals or changes you’d like to achieve. In our counseling sessions, we’ll provide you with psychoeducation about ADHD and explore any underlying stressors or issues that may be intensifying symptoms.

Throughout the process, we’ll offer you emotional support, ways to hold yourself accountable, and effective tools for managing symptoms and navigating life with greater ease.

When working with children and adolescents, we typically meet with the parent and child first to get their collective perspective of what’s going on. Then, depending on the child’s wishes and their level of comfort, we can begin working with them independently.

Every couple of weeks, we’ll update parents on progress, including any tips or insights gained from sessions that may help make life easier. If a parent needs additional support, we can investigate supplementing ADHD therapy with parent coaching.

What Kind Of Tools Do We Use In ADHD Counseling?

People experience Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder in different ways, so our approach to ADHD treatment is designed to be unique to each person. We also use a client-centered, strengths-based approach to therapy that offers individuals skills to support their executive functioning, including managing daily tasks and emotions with greater confidence. Some of the tools we use include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for ADHD targets the negative thoughts, beliefs, and feelings people often adopt toward themselves because of their struggles.

  • Solution-Focused Therapy is about connecting a client to their inherent strengths and finding practical ways of navigating daily life with ADHD. It’s a great treatment option for children and adolescents as well as for parents and family members impacted by childhood ADHD.

Some of the strategies we can offer to make life a little less overwhelming include tips for staying organized, focused, and on task. Clients can learn how to eliminate distractions and manage time better. And they’ll gain lifelong skills for advocating needs, modifying unproductive behaviors, and understanding and regulating emotions.

The truth is that ADHD does not have to hold you back. In fact, it can be a strength and resource once you learn how to manage symptoms, and that’s what our ADHD therapists at Key Counseling Group want for you. Working together, you can reinforce your relationships, gain a sense of control in your life, and find greater success in work, academics, and your personal ambitions.

Perhaps You Still Have Concerns About ADHD Therapy…

I had a bad experience in therapy once and worry this will be the same.

Therapy is an extremely vulnerable experience, and it requires courage to walk through the door for the first session, especially after a bad experience in the past. We strive to create a warm environment in which you and your concerns remain at the forefront of our sessions.

Key Counseling Group provides you with a place where you feel seen, heard, and understood. We also welcome your feedback to ensure that our approaches and therapeutic relationship are beneficial and affirming.

I feel like ADHD therapy will take forever to make a difference.

The amount of time we each need in therapy is unique, so we encourage you to be patient with yourself. Sometimes, this is one of the hardest parts of healing because we all want to feel better as soon as possible. It’s usually why we engage in therapy in the first place.

Truthfully, change takes time, but we’ll be here with you each step of the way monitoring your progress, adjusting our approach, and making sure that in each moment with us you are growing.

I feel like even with ADHD treatment, nothing will change.

A lot of people who have tried to manage their ADHD symptoms on their own or engaged in therapy before without success often worry that their symptoms are too large for any real change to happen. However, healing and managing your symptoms is possible. It may not happen overnight, but with time, consistency, and openness, you can foster real and lasting change in your life.

A happy family
