Infertility Counseling
Are You Going Through Fertility Treatments Or Having Trouble Conceiving?
Do you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster as you manage all of the unknowns about if and when you’ll get pregnant? Is the constant waiting and lack of control wearing you down to the point that you’re starting to blame yourself? Are you single or part of the LGBTQIA+ community and hoping to have a child, but the odds seem stacked against you?
Perhaps you’re seeing friends become parents and you feel left behind or even resentful of couples who have not experienced what you’re going through. Or maybe the challenge of getting pregnant the traditional way is creating tension and stress in your relationship that you don’t know how to resolve.
When you are coping with fertility challenges or having difficulty conceiving, it can feel like your body is betraying you. The sadness and grief turn to disappointment and shame until you feel guilty—as though you’ve done something wrong. And if you’re going through fertility treatments, the seemingly endless hormones, shots, and invasive exams turn what is supposed to be a miracle of nature into a clinical, mechanical process.
And on top of work and other daily responsibilities, you still have to track cycles and medication, go to treatment sessions, and make room for last-minute doctors’ appointments. By the end of the day, you likely have little time or energy to process all the complex emotions you’re experiencing. At this point, all you want is for your body to cooperate with you.
At Key Counseling Group, we understand what you are going through, and we want to stand by your side as a source of strength and stability. Though the chaos of fertility treatments and trying to get pregnant can wear on you, there is hope—and we can help.
Millions Of Other Couples Share Your Painful Experience
Although you may feel alone or misunderstood right now, there are millions of couples out there struggling to get pregnant. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), 15 percent of couples have to overcome some type of infertility issue.* Yet, despite the fact that problems conceiving are fairly common, it is often considered a secretive issue and not something that people share very openly, making this struggle a very isolating and lonely experience.
What makes this whole process particularly difficult is the fact that there’s not always an easy solution or answer. Plus, getting pregnant requires so many factors to align just right that success can begin to seem hopeless. The long wait periods combined with all of the factors that are beyond your control can also create a lot of frustration and disappointment that get turned inward. As a result, you can get stuck in a negative feedback loop of shame and self-blame—especially if you’ve experienced the loss of a previous pregnancy.
There are many reasons why you could be having trouble conceiving, and not one of them is your fault. Environmental or situational factors, genetics, the shape of your uterus, difficulty ovulating, or male infertility can all affect your ability to conceive. Although that knowledge alone may not be of much comfort to you, Key Counseling Group can be. If you are looking for guidance as you navigate these difficult times, our fertility specialist can empower you with solutions, hope, and courage.
Counseling Offers Women A Respite From The Stress And Chaos Of Infertility Challenges
Whether you’re dealing with diagnosed infertility issues or having difficulty conceiving, counseling provides a safe space to let out all your thoughts, emotions, and frustrations about the process. If you are like most women, you’re probably reluctant to share your experience or feelings with family and friends for fear of burdening them.
That’s why counseling for challenges with infertility and getting pregnant can be so beneficial—it offers you a place where you can release your emotions and feel heard, validated, and supported. It also offers you the opportunity to learn positive coping skills for managing the ups and downs of trying to get pregnant.
After a brief intake session, we’ll start by gathering some general information about your background. If you are in a relationship, may discuss how long you have been with your partner, how you met, or what you do for a living. And if you are single, we can talk about your hopes for a family and what inspires you to be a mother. We’ll also look at what type of family life and support network you have. Once you feel comfortable, we can explore the specific challenges that bring you to Key Counseling Group, how they are affecting you, and how you would like us to help.
Working together, you can always expect to find validation while developing a deeper understanding of the emotional impact of your experience, including fertility treatments. We’ll equip you with skills for coping with disappointment, the lack of control, and the endless waiting game. And we can show you how to manage expectations and process grief and loss while remaining connected to yourself and your partner.
At the same time, we want to help you explore the full range of emotions you are experiencing and challenge any faulty thought patterns and narratives that may impact your actions or behavior. To that end, we may use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify and transform negative self-perceptions into something more positive and representative of the truth.
We also want to help you cast off the shroud of secrecy and shame so you can open up to others and feel seen and heard and understood. You’ll learn strategies for communicating better with your spouse or partner, friends, and close family members so you can navigate this journey together. At the same time, we will teach you how to quiet your anxiety, identify what you are feeling, and draw strength from other areas of your life that bring you peace and fulfillment.
Right now, your whole world probably feels unpredictable and out of control. However, through our work together, you can learn to ride the wave of chaos and figure out what you need to get through each step of the process. There is a lot of hope for your future family, and we will help you hang on to that hope even when you don’t feel like you can. Whether you need space to grieve, be angry, vent, or rejoice, you can find peace and contentment—and we can show you the way.
Perhaps you are considering counseling for infertility challenges, but you still have some concerns…
Do you have an intake process?
We first provide a free, 15-minute consultation call so we can answer any questions you may have and determine if our services fit your needs. If you decide to move forward with scheduling a session, you will receive an invitation to our online client portal where you can fill out the intake paperwork, which must be completed and submitted before our first session.
I am already spending a lot on fertility treatments, I don’t know if I have the time or money for reproductive therapy too.
We understand that adding another bill to your finances probably feels overwhelming. However, therapy is an investment that pays off indefinitely. It’s a powerful resource for support and an integral part of self-care during the emotionally intense up and down process of fertility treatments.
We are also more than willing to work with your schedule to make therapy a priority. And though taking time to meet is important, if we have to skip a week here or there for your own sanity, that’s fine. We don’t have to meet weekly for therapy to be effective, and it can lower the financial cost as well. Also, with the increased use of telemental health, we can save time by meeting virtually.
I’ve always figured out things on my own. Why would I need an infertility therapist?
Being self-reliant is a noble attribute. However, many of the women we see in therapy feel that this experience is one of the greatest challenges they have ever had to face, which is why they come to us. For people who are used to working through problems on their own, the realization that they need help can create a lot of intense emotions. But we can help you explore those dynamics of self-sufficiency, customize coping skills that work for you, and draw from your internal strengths so you can empower yourself.
